"The
dream is a little hidden door in the innermost and most secret
recesses of the soul, opening into that cosmic night which
was psyche long before there was any ego- consciousness, and
which will remain psyche no matter how far our ego-consciousness
extends.".....Carl Jung
Dreams
have two levels of interpretation, the objective (analytical),
in which the symbols stand for external realities, and subjective
(synthetic; "hermeneutic"), in which they stand
for aspects of the dreamer's psyche. If the person dreamed
about is of vital interest to the dreamer, an object interpretation
is probably appropriate.
The
physiological theory centers upon how our body, specifically
our brains, function during the REM phase of sleep. Proponents
of this theory believe that we dream to exercise the synapses,
or pathways, between brain cells, and that dreaming takes
over where the active and awake brain leaves off. When awake,
our brains constantly transmit and receive messages, which
course through our billions of brain cells to their appropriate
destinations, and keep our bodies in perpetual motion. Dreams
replace this function.
Until
someone proves or disproves one of these theories, or poses
an alternate one, we are left at square one. Our knowledge
as to what causes us to dream is limited to the fact that
we do dream, and that dreams occur during the REM phase of
sleep. Sweet dreams!
There are different types of dreams, of course. Prophetic
or telepathic dreams, problem-solving dreams (aha!), recurring
dreams, lucid dreams, nightmares, and others. However, a good
general rule is that the majority of your dreams, over time,
are about you: your worldview, conflicts, fears, loves, and
progress through life.
Your dream may be very specific and down-to-earth about
something going on right now in your life. Or you may have
a dream that requires a bird's-eye kind of perspective, as
if you are looking at the events from a great height or with
the perspective of a lot of human history behind it (or a
lot of your history behind it). As you follow your dreams
over time, you'll begin to understand what each dream requires
of you.
Dreams
generally speak in a multi-dimensional language of feelings,
images and multi-level associations rather than linear words
and concepts. Says author Bernie Siegel, M.D., "While
our minds and our bodies communicate constantly with each
other, most of this exchange occurs on an unconscious level.
That’s why I often advise patients to start recording
dreams, because the body cannot speak except by using symbols."
